Case Study 1 - Conceptual Design

A new facility for the contract manufacture of therapeutic proteins using multiple 15,000L bioreactors. The project focused on determining the optimal configuration based on capital, utilisation, and productivity requirements whilst accounting for the impact of production campaigns, and increasing product titres over the lifecycle of the facility.

Aims & Objectives

  • Throughput analysis
  • Productivity optimisation
  • Capital optimisation
  • Expansion planning
  • Concept demonstration

Results

  • Decline in throughput over several campaigns
  • Optimised bioreactor and seed train configuration
  • Long term expansion requirements and, in particular, the size of DSP equipment required to implement each phase
  • Identification of DSP bottlenecks for each equipment size and development of a detailed upgrade plan
